Travel for good - responsible travel projects

If you think you're too small to make a difference, try to sleep in the same room with a mosquito.

At Colibri Travel & Tours we promote sustainable and responsible travel practices. All travelers that use our services directly support community projects in the countries we travel to.

Environmental Project

Cubags

CUBA

2019

Together with Emory & Henry College, Colibri Travel & Tours gifted reusable bags to the Eco communities of Las Terrazas and the University of  Cienfuegos. We support co-operatives that produce reusable bags from rice packaging. By reducing the plastic bags on the island, we help to minimize the amount of trash that often goes to the ocean.

Environmental Project

Solar Panel

PERU

2019

On Lake Titicaca indigenous tribes, the Uros, live on the islands made of living reeds that float on the water. They run a bed and breakfast that allows them to host tourists and earn some money. One of the biggest challenges on those tiny islands is electricity. On behalf of UMass faculty led study abroad trip to Colombia and Peru, we donated funds to purchase solar panel for one of the Uros.

Community Project

Soccer balls

ZAMBIA

2019

A few years ago we got inspired by a project and a book called Amen by Jessica Hilltout. Since then, each time we take a group to Africa we bring professional soccer balls to schools and villages where kids often play with hand made balls. On behalf of our AAIDD delegation we gifted a ball to Joseph, a boy with autism from Mukuni village, and to the soccer team from a local school in Livingstone, Zambia.

Community Project

Baseball equipment

CUBA

2019

In Cuba, baseball is hugely popular. During one of Colibri’s adult trips we saw kids playing baseball on the streets of Havana with wooden sticks and rocks. We returned home with a mission to collect reusable baseball equipment and donate it to the local community center. One of our travelers, Vince, collected great amount of bats, balls, helmets and travelled for a few days by train from Philadelphia to Miami with all the baseball gifts. Thanks to his commitment and generosity, Cuba now has two new junior baseball leagues in Havana.

Community Project

Muraleando

CUBA

2019

Cubans from the suburbs of Havana organized themselves and created a community arts center. One of their services includes providing after school programs especially for children with mental and intellectual disability. Colibri Travel & Tours frequently brings adult tours and school groups to Muraleando for music classes, art workshops, cooking classes and to provide support for the community.

Community Project

Laptops for education

LATIN AMERICA

2019

Together with our high school teacher-led groups we collect, clean and reset used laptops and bring them to schools in remote parts of Latin America. We promote a “quiet” giving and instead of us passing on the laptop we include the teachers so they can provide technology to their schools and students.
