Beyond the Classroom: A Journey Through Peru with Frontier Regional School

A group shot at Machu Picchu

In April 2025, students from Frontier Regional School traveled to Peru with Colibri Travel & Tours for an enriching educational experience that blended culture, history, ecology, and community engagement. From the cliffs of Lima to the heart of the Amazon jungle, every step of the journey was designed to create powerful moments of learning—and unforgettable memories.

Day 1–2: Welcome to Lima

Students began their journey in Lima, diving into Peruvian culture with a cooking class, a visit to the UNESCO-listed historic center, and a stroll along the cliffs of Miraflores. It was the perfect start to an immersive trip.

Day 3–4: Sacred Valley & Ollantaytambo

After flying to Cusco, the group explored the stunning Sacred Valley—visiting the ancient town of Ollantaytambo and spending time with the Indigenous community of Chinchero. Students explored Inca ruins, learned about traditional textile weaving techniques, and were welcomed with music and dance by local families.

“Our trip to the indigenous community was one of the greatest highlights. I feel privileged to have met these wonderful people who shared their sacred space and rites with us."
Jodi Greenberg
Spanish Teacher, Frontier Regional School

Day 5: Machu Picchu

Early morning in Machu Picchu—a breathtaking highlight. Students explored the citadel and took in the incredible architecture and history of the lost Inca city.

Day 6: Cusco Markets & Chocolate

In Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, students visited local markets, museums, and a chocolate workshop, connecting directly with local artisans and traditions.

“Our students were enthralled that they were able to see and experience so much of Peru in just 9 short days.”
Pamela Sharron
Spanish Teacher, Frontier Regional School

Day 7–8: Amazon Rainforest (Tambopata)

The group traveled deep into the jungle by boat, visiting Lake Sandoval and exploring the Tambopata National Reserve. They hiked through the rainforest, kayaked, spotted wildlife, and walked the Canopy Bridge + Zipline for an incredible perspective on biodiversity.

💬 What Teachers Said

“Focusing on the experiential side of travel, with opportunities to interact with local people and their knowledge, was more impactful to our students than traditional tour formats.”
Jodi Greenberg
